Photos from heavyweight competitions at the 2017 edition of The Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville can now be viewed in our online galleries here. The Aug. 9 edition of The Glengarry News will have full coverage of this year's Games.

Olympic connections

Many Glengarrians have had special reasons to cheer on Canadian athletes at the Rio Olympics.

Gold-medal winning high jumper Derek Drouin has in the past got lifts from Jean-François Ménard, the Green Valley native who as a performance psychology specialist has worked with some of the world’s top athletes.

Meanwhile, Dannie Boyd, of Kingston, was being backed by her aunt Mary McCrimmon Leduc, and uncle Donald McCrimmon, of McCrimmon, as she competed in sailing earlier Meanwhile, fencer Joseph Polossifakis, 25, of Montréal, has Alexandria links. His mother was raised in Alexandria and his grandfather Louis Pavlounis is the owner of the Alexandria Pizzeria.

New tradition

Something old and something new. That proves to be a winning combination for the Glengarry Highland Games, which this year featured a kilt run, led off by Michael Smith and his horse, MP. Read more in the August 3 edition of The News.
