NOTICE OF COUNCIL MEETING REGARDING DRAFT CLEAR CUTTING BY-LAW

The Planning Department of the Township of North Glengarry is hosting a Council Meeting regarding the DRAFT Clear Cutting By-law.

The public is invited to attend the Council Meeting on: Wednesday, November 4th, 2020 at 1 PM.

The meeting will be held at the Glengarry Sports Palace, upstairs, located at: 170 McDonald Blvd, Alexandria.

Please note that capacity will be capped to the gathering limits prescribed by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit at the time of the meeting.

The Township of North Glengarry has lifted the total burn ban which went into effect April 3.

The restriction was imposed to protect fire department staff during the COVID-19 pandemic and the approaching dry season.

North Glengarry Fire Chief Matthew Roy has been closely monitoring the situation and decided this week to lift the edict.

"We would like to thank our residents for supporting our local firefighters during the burn ban. We recognize that many of you are eager to resume burning for both agricultural and recreational purposes. We remind residents that any and all Open Air fires require burn permits and that our residents must follow all of the rules that accompany their burn permit. We need your help to keep our community safe," he said.

Residents who had previously received their burn permits can now burn, provided that they are following the conditions set forth within the Township's Burn By-Law. This includes refraining from all fires when conditions are not favourable, such as on windy days when the wind velocity is greater than 15 kilometres per hour.

All Open Air burns must be monitored at all times; and it is never permitted to burn noxious materials, such as tires, plastics, garbage or construction materials.

Burn permits are available online at the Township of North Glengarry's website at www.northglengarry.ca or through the direct link at https://northglengarry.burnpermits.com/. Burn permits take about 48 hours to process and are currently only available online. It is illegal to have an open air fire without a burn permit. Offenders may face fines.

North Glengarry has cancelled public programming within the municipality. All March Break Activities that were scheduled to take place during the break have been cancelled. This includes events scheduled to take place at the Tim Hortons' Dome, the Glengarry Sports Palace and the Maxville and District Sports Complex. The March Break Day-Camp has also been cancelled.

"We encourage all residents to educate themselves on the COVID-19 virus. This is best done through the Eastern Ontario Health Unit's website and other reliable sources," said North Glengarry CAO Sarah Huskinson.

Michel Riberdy has quit as North Glengarry's director of public works, about six months after he was named to the post.

The former Augusta Township employee has resigned to take a job closer to his home town, the township says.

He was hired in June to replace Ryan Morton, who was dismissed in April after being with the municipality since 2013.

Michel Riberdy is the new Director of Public Works for the Township of North Glengarry.

Succeeding Ryan Morton, who was recently dismissed, Mr. Riberdy, who has been Augusta Township's public works manager for the past five years, begins his new job June 17.

A 59-year-old Laval man has been identified as the victim of a fatal two-truck collision May 29 on Highway 417 in North Glengarry.

Claude Boudreau was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident after the eastbound tractor-trailer he was driving struck a parked truck in a construction zone east of McCrimmon Road.

Two North Glengarry residents have been charged after Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry Ontario Provincial Police officers seized a quantity of drugs, weapons and currency during a raid May 10.

Robin Rozon, 40, and Melanie Larchevesque, 39, have been charged with possession of a controlled substance for purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime and failing to comply with an undertaking.

Municipal taxes North Glengarry will be frozen after council approved the 2019 budget Monday.

The township will collect $5,831,033 for municipal purposes.

For every tax dollar that property owners pay, 38% is paid to the municipality, 43% goes to the County and 19% is transferred to school board taxes. The tax rate by-law will be presented to Council once both the County and school board rates have been confirmed.
