Fake toonies

Be on the look-out for fake $2 coins. That is the warning issued by the Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police detachment after counterfeit toonies were used to make a purchase at a Regent Street store. Anyone with information that can help the investigation is asked to contact the Hawkesbury OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000. At first glance, the bogus money looks legitimate enough. However, closer examination reveals several errors. The coins include typos and images that do not appear on the real currency. “Z dollard” is inscribed on one side along with a photo of a walrus. On the other side, there is a depiction of a male figure. The real coins feature a polar bear and a portrait of Queen Elizabeth. The incident has made national news. One astute Toronto investor actually believes they could become valuable collectors’ items.
