Lanthier expands in Baie d'Urfé

Lanthier Bakery has received a $2 million repayable contribution from the federal government to expand its Baie d'Urfé plant, and modernize a new digital production line.

Founded in 1932, Lanthier Bakery is a family-owned business located in Alexandria.

In 1985, it set up a second production plant on the Island of Montréal, where it makes bread using traditional recipes. In 2016, in cooperation with its principal shareholder, France-based La Fournée Dorée, Lanthier Bakery developed a new range of brioche breads – a niche product – and now aims to specialize in this niche market, where demand continues to grow.

Betty Bread label sold

The iconic Betty Bread line, produced by Boulangerie Lanthier Bakery, of Alexandria, has been purchased by La Boulangerie Auger, of St-Jérôme.

The family-owned local bakery, founded in 1932, will continue to produce its other brands.

Boulangerie Auger says the Betty Bread brand, with sales of $20 million a year, will help the Québec business carve out a large slice of the Ontario market.

Business raided

Police raided an Alexandria metal reycling operation early last Thursday as part of an investigation into an alleged multi-million-dollar “complex” tax evasion scheme.

Officers executed a search warrant at Kenyon Auto Centre on County Road 45 March 16 during Opération Nobélium, a two-year Sûreté du Québec probe of a series of transactions that allegedly defrauded the Québec government of $17 million in tax revenue over a period of 19 months.
