Fatal closes section of 417

A fatal collision involving three tractor trailers that burst into flames has closed a section of the westbound Highway 417 at County Road 14 near Chute-à-Blondeau east of Hawkesbury. One person died in the accident that occurred at approximately 3:40 a.m.Highway 417 Westbound is closed at County Road 14 and detours will be in effect for several hours.

CrashBernard Lalonde, North Glengarry fire services administrator and Alexandria fire station chief, centre back, assists other firefighters following a collision on Main St. N. near Centre Street in Alexandria at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. Traffic was congested until the scene was cleared. Police and emergency services also assisted. More details to follow.

School buses, other events cancelled as storm strikes the county

All school buses servicing the county have been cancelled for today, as Glengarry takes the brunt of a winter storm that is expected to bring heavy snow, followed by ice pellets and freezing rain.

Schools remain open.

At approximately 6:30am, on the eastbound 401 near Bainsville, there was a collision that has one lane of the highway closed.

Day one of the SD&G high school curling championships in Cornwall has been cancelled. It's expected that the event will be condensed into one day, to be played Wednesday in Morrisburg.

Iona Academy's ski trip slated for today will be rescheduled.

All branches of the SD&G public library are closed today (February 16) due to the winter storm.

Tonight's CCHL2 game in Williamstown, between the Char-Lan Rebels and Sittsville Royals, has been postponed.

The Glengarry Soccer League has announced that all soccer scheduled for this evening at the Alexandria dome has been cancelled.
