Speedway hoping for good weather for racing on Canada Day

The Cornwall Motor Speedway is scheduled to resume action on Canada Day, Sunday, July 1 – Mother Nature permitting.

Among the scheduled events is the fourth stop of the Super DIRTcar Series Tour. It will be the first feature fun this season on Canadian soil.

Drivers expected to race include Stewart Friesen (winner of two features to date), defending champion Matt Sheppard, current points leader Jimmy Phelps, Max McLaughlin, Erick Rudolph, Billy Decker, Danny Johnson, Pat Ward, Pete Britten, Tim Fuller, Brett Hearn, Tim Kerr, and Alan Barker.

Home turf will be defended by Carey Terrance, Chris Raabe, Brian McDonald, Joey Ladouceur, Tyler Givogue, Kyle Dingwall, Corey Wheeler, and Mario Clair.

The slate also includes feature races for Sportsman and Mini-Stock classes.

The pit gate will open at 2 p.m. with an access price of $45. General admission will be available at 3:30 p.m. with entry prices set at $35 for adults, $20 for seniors 65 years plus, and $5 for kids aged 16 and under.

Super DIRTcar Series time trials are set for 6 p.m., with heat races scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

1% Cornwall Electric hike

Cornwall Electric is increasing rates by one per cent for its 24,800 customers in South Glengarry, Cornwall, South Stormont, and the Ontario portion of the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne.

“The long-term contract in place with Hydro Quebec is a wholesale contract and it has and continues to allow Cornwall Electric rates to compare favorably to surrounding electrical utilities and ensures that we continue to provide rate stability and reliable electricity to our customers,” says Jackie Baird, Regional Manager of Cornwall Electric.

A residential customer using 1,000 kWh per month will see an average monthly increase of $1.30.

3-on-3 basketball tourney planned for Canada Day in Alexandria

A new basketball court is coming to Alexandria's Island Park, and the township is planning to christen it with a Canada Day 3-on-3 tournament.

The July 1 event will run from 4 to 8 p.m., with the following boys and girls divisions: U13, U16, and open (any age). Entry is $20 per team, and the deadline to sign up is June 29.

A little rain cannot dampen Canada Day spirits

This young boy epitomized the spirit of Canada Day in Glengarry as he took in a ground-level view of the July 1 Alexandria parade Saturday. Despite the rain, huge crowds turned out for festivities throughout the area.
