Puck drops on new high school hockey season Dec. 6

sean Dec 5, 2016 - 2:30pm

The 2016-17 season of boys high school hockey gets underway Dec. 6 in Cornwall, when the Seaway City will host a slate of matches at the multi-sports complex.

All seven teams in the SDGAA league will be in action, beginning at 9 a.m., when North Dundas and La Citadelle will collide. At 10 a.m., it will be Holy Trinity versus Seaway, followed by North Dundas against GDHS at 11 a.m., Seaway versus Char-Lan at noon, GDHS taking on St. Joseph’s at 1 p.m., and Char-Lan playing La Citadelle at 2 p.m.

The Gaels mark their return to the league this year, under the guidance of coach Ryan Winter.

There had been some discussion of a two-tiered league this season, with the second tier being non-contact, but there weren’t sufficient schools interested to make that a go.

The Dec. 6 tournament will be the only one before the Christmas break, with the next event booked for Jan. 11 in Morrisburg.

Future competitions are set for Feb. 7 in Williamstown and Feb. 14 in Long Sault.

Playoffs are tentatively booked for Feb. 28, to be hosted by the first-place team. The top four schools will qualify.

EOSSAA will take place in Cornwall, on March 8.

Hockey is different from some high school sports (such as soccer and basketball), in that ‘A’ and ‘AA’ schools compete in the same league and playoffs.
