Summerstown Trails remain open for snowshoeing, skiing

sean Feb 23, 2017 - 3:26pm

According to Jean-Pierre Tibi of FOTST, the trails in the Summerstown Forest remain open for snowshoeing and skiing, though the mild weather is taking its toll on the snow.

Today, a group of students from CCVS will be taking advantage of the facilities.

Tibi is optimistic that the base will survive the mild weather and forecast rain, as the trails have been hard-packed by hundreds of school kids in recent weeks. The snow in the forest itself is quickly disappearing.

Last Monday, for Family Day, the Summerstown Forest hosted several hundred visitors, including 278 who took advantage of the free equipment rental. Tibi believes that many of these individuals were first-time visitors.

FOTST has a moonlight outing for members planned for March 10. The evening will wrap up with everyone retiring to Jack's Pub in Williamstown.

Family Day opportunities include activities at Summerstown Forest

The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) invites area residents and families to come out to the cross-country ski and snowshoe trails at the Summerstown Forest on Family Day, Monday, February 20, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“Last year’s event, which attracted more than 200 participants was a great success,” says Paul Couture, FOTST President. “Many families came out to the trails for the first time to try out cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.”

Once again, the group will organize special activities as their way of supporting today’s busy families. There will be no cost to participate in any of the activities.

In addition to coming out to explore the 18 km of cross-country ski trails and 9 km of snowshoe trails, the following special activities will be offered: fun snowshoe races for kids, guided tours, free hot dogs, marshmallows, and hot chocolate. Also, families will be able to rent ski and snowshoe equipment free of charge throughout the day.

The trails are situated on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north of exit 804 of the 401.
