(By Martin Bélanger) The racing season starts earlier in 2015 at Cornwall Motor Speedway, as the Circuit Pro Tour invades the speedway for a three-day weekend event, on January 30 and 31, and February 1.
Several categories of snowmobile will be in the pits, while the quarter-mile track will feature plenty of high-speed racing. This is the shortest track on the circuit. Four-wheeler and motorcycle racing have also been added to the schedule.
The Pro-Champ, Outlaws, Formula 500 Open, 440 Vintage, Single Cylinder Mod Open, Junior 340 Open, along with the 4-wheeler and Motorcycle classes will be on hand over the weekend.
The Pro-Champ category will be the one to watch, with three finals including Friday night under the lights when veteran and well-known driver Jacques Villeneuve will be in Cornwall, along with the talented Jason Lavallée from Quebec, Cole McMichael from Ontario, American Travis Patocka, and upcoming star in snowmobile Sabrina Blanchet.
Speedway staff have worked hard over the last month to prepare the best racing surface possible, with the high-bank corners causing a few headaches. Nonetheless, the track is ready and will provide a great challenge for the racers and great entertainment for the fans.
Action will start of Friday evening at 6:30pm with 8 classes in action. The events will start at 10:30am on Saturday and Sunday. Cost of admission will be $20 on Friday and Saturday, and $25 on Sunday. A three-day weekend package is also available for $50. The cost includes full access to the pit area.
It's the third last weekend of the EOJHL junior B hockey season, and the playoff bound Alexandria Glens remain in the driver's seat to lock up second spot. The Glens hold a four-point edge over the third-place Winchester Hawks, a likely first-round playoff opponent, with five games remaining.
The Char-Lan Rebels also control their own destiny, currently in fourth place, but just one point ahead of Akwesasne, which also has a game in hand. The Rebs have seven games remaining, including two versus the Wolves.
Battle of Glengarry
The final round of this year's Battle of Glengarry is set for tonight in Alexandria, with the Rebels and Glens scheduled to collide at the Glengarry Sports Palace, starting at 8pm.
In other weekend action, Char-Lan will host the Akwesasne Wolves Saturday night at 8pm in Williamstown. Also Saturday night, the Alexandria boys will be in Morrisburg to take on the last-place Lions.
The annual Glengarry Emergency Services hockey tournament is set to be played at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria, on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10am to 10pm, continuing on Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
