Congratulations to Canada Day Parade Button Drawing Contest grand prize winner Cecilia Liolios. The public chose the Williamstown Public School Grade 4 student's lapel button design in the contest sponsored by The Glengarry News, Papeterie Alexandria Stationery and the Alexandria and District Lions Club. She is shown with Cassie Depratto Nutt, Alexandria and District Lions Club Canada Day Parade committee chair, and Sylvain Martin, owner of Papeterie Alexandria Stationery.

High school soccer kicks off in Alexandria

Call it an upset? Glengarry District High School's junior teams (boys and girls) were swept this morning by squads representing Holy Trinity to open the SDGAA soccer season in Alexandria. The Gaels boys fell 4-2 to the Falcons, while the girls were blanked 4-0.

Man charged in gas theft

Corey Pettinella, 40, of South Stormont Township, has been charged with two counts of theft following gas thefts at the Monkland Esso gas bar April 18 and 9.
He was released and scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cornwall July 5. The SD&G OPP detachment thanks the public for the tips received following the publishing of the information via local media.

This surveillance photo shows a man who stole gas from the Monkland Esso gas bar on Highway 138 Monday. The suspect also fueled his vehicle and sped off without paying April 9. In both occurrences, the vehicle was observed heading east on County Road 43. The vehicle is as a 1997 or 2003 four-door Pontiac Grand Prix (GT or GTP model), forest green with a rear spoiler and sun roof. The plates were covered with plastic bags. The suspect is 5’10”, medium build, with scruffy facial hair and was wearing a camouflage ball cap with aviator sunglasses with red tint lenses.
Anyone with information regarding the theft should immediately contact SD&G OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Marc Pilon, of Long Sault, who rolled his kayak after shooting the dam at Martintown, insisted at the finish line that he wasn't cold despite the icicles hanging from his cap. He finished first in the Long Kayak and eighth overall in Sunday's Raisin River Canoe Race. More in the April 13 edition of The News.
