The Buttons Are Here

The first Canada Day Parade Buttons have arrived. They can be bought for $1 each at The Glengarry News, Papeterie Alexandria Stationery and from any member of the Alexandria and District Lions Club. You will recall that the lapel button design was created by Cecilia Liolios, a Williamstown Public School Grade 4 student, who won a contest organized by the Lions. The buttons will also be on sale during the Canada Day parade in Alexandria.


GDHS Gaels advance to OFSAA quarter-finals

Both the Glengarry District High School boys and girls soccer teams have advanced to OFSAA quarter-final play today.

The Gaels boys had a round-robin record of 2 wins and 1 loss, placing second in their pool. They are booked to meet Ridley College in a 2pm QF match.

The girls ran the table unbeaten, not allowing a goal against in four games whilst scoring 11 times. They will play in the quarter-finals at 5:15pm, against an opponent yet to be determined.

Unfortunately, there is no online broadcast of games available. The boys are playing in Windsor, with the girls in North Bay.

New additions to photo gallery include mosquito football, doubles tennis

Char-Lan DHS wins unofficial SD&G field lacrosse championship

Today in Williamstown, the Char-Lan Crusaders outlasted the CCVS Raiders to prevail in triple overtime, 8-7, for the unofficial SD&G field lacrosse title. The Glengarry News was there shooting photos of the action from the spirited final, and we will have coverage next week, in our June 8 edition.

The playoff tournament is unofficial as the sport is currently operates outside of the SDGAA and EOSSAA, but the hope is that will change next year. For Char-Lan, this isn't the end of their season quite yet, as the boys are slated to play in one more tournament later this week.

La Citadelle beat St. Joseph's in the consolation final, 6-5.

Camp Day

Glengarry News managing editor Steven Warburton will be working the drive-thru at the Tim Hortons just north of Maxville on Wednesday, June 1, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. He'll be there helping the store with its annual Camp Day endeavour.

Bear sighting

A black bear cub was spotted roaming near a home near Cornwall, on Bruce Street in South Stormont, earlier this morning. The animal did not harm anyone, relates the Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry Ontario Provincial Police detachment, which has notified area residents, schools and school bus companies.
People are being advised to be wary as black bears come out of hibernation.


EOSSAA 'A' soccer championship for Le Relais junior girls team

The county's soccer system shines brightly today, as Le Relais nabbed the EOSSAA 'A' junior girls championship. Congrats to Les Rapides!

The success for the ladies comes on the heels on EOSSAA wins by GDHS' senior girls and boys teams, as well as Char-Lan's junior boys squad, making it a clean sweep of titles for the Glengarry county.

Man charged in foiled burglary

A 31-year-old North Glengarry man has been charged following an investigation into a foiled burglary November 29, 2015.
Nicholas Button has been charged with robbery, wounding, break and enter by the Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry Ontario Provincial Police detachment. During the incident at a Tobin Street, Alexandria residence, a woman was struck by a metal object after the homeowners confronted a man inside their home. The man then fled. The victim was treated at hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

GDHS senior boys, Char-Lan junior boys win EOSSAA soccer

Yesterday in Alexandria, after this week's edition of The Glengarry News went to press, GDHS' senior boys soccer team and Char-Lan's junior boys won the EOSSAA championships, in Alexandria. We will have all the details and photos in the newspaper next week.

Girls soccer teams competing at EOSSAA today

GDHS senior girls soccer team, as the SD&G 'A' champion, is competing today at EOSSAA in Elgin, hosted by Rideau DHS.

Holy Trinity's senior girls, who won the 'AA' title for SD&G, are in Carleton Place today, for their EOSSAA tournament, organized by Notre Dame CHS.

Le Relais' junior girls are also in action at EOSSAA today.
