Car-truck crash charges

richard Jul 6, 2016 - 12:36pm

Two drivers have been charged in a car-truck collision Sunday on Highway 417 at Highway 34, near Vankleek Hill.
The investigation revealed that a 2003 Acura was traveling in the slow eastbound lane when a tractor trailer, leaving the on-ramp, merged in front of the Acura. The car then quickly changed lanes, cutting off a Honda Civic traveling in the passing lane. The Civic then swerved, hit the gravel shoulder, spun and collided with the tractor trailer. The Civic driver sustained very minor injuries, reports the Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police detachment.
The car driver, Michel Coss, 58, of St-Laurent, Québec, was charged with impaired driving.
The 26-year-old driver of the black Acura was charged with making an unsafe lane change.

If there is a postal strike...

richard Jul 4, 2016 - 9:38am

As we prepare our next edition, the possibility of a Canada Post strike or lockout looms.
Since we are optimists, we will continue to mail out copies of our July 6 edition as usual.
But, in the event the labour dispute remains unresolved, your papers will get stuck in the Canada Post System.
If service is disrupted, for the duration of the impasse, The Glengarry News subscribers will not receive their papers through the mail.
If you receive your copy as usual, obviously, postal service has not yet been disrupted.
However, if you do not receive your News through the mail, you can pick up your copy at our office at 3 Main St. S., Alexandria.
For subscribers living outside the immediate region, your copies will be held and mailed out once a settlement has been reached.
As usual, copies will be available at the many retail locations throughout the district.
If you have not yet tried our digital edition, now may be a good time to check it out at
We shall post updates on the postal negotiations on our various platforms:,, on our Facebook page and on Twitter.
We appreciate your ongoing support and patience.

Too many questions

richard Jun 21, 2016 - 12:31pm

When Gilles Carrière died in 1970, the death of the 15-year-old from Glen Roy was ruled to be a drowning. But his father and his brother never accepted that Gilles, a strong swimmer, could drown in four feet of water. The coroner admitted the investigation was flawed; to this day, details remain confidential; documents are heavily redacted. "There are too many questions," says Bernie Carrière. Read about how he and his wife are "trying to piece together this puzzle" in the June 22 edition of The News.
