Pelletier wins initial round of Race for the Cure Sportsman at Cornwall Motor Speedway

sean May 22, 2018 - 1:07pm

Capping off a busy two days of racing at the Cornwall Motor Speedway on Monday, Martin Pelletier was victorious in the opening stage of the Race for the Cure series for Sportsman class cars.

The May 21 slate also featured a 40-lap Modified event, the Eastern Ontario Vintage Club, and the Mini-Stock division.

In the Race for the Cure, Shane Pecore wasted no time and took the lead on the initial green of the 100-lap feature ahead of Gabriel Cyr and James Friesen. With 5 laps in, Tristan Draper found an opening on the top side to move into second, with Cyr in third.

Pecore got caught up in heavy traffic on lap 15, as he moved away from the rest of the field. Martin Pelletier made his way to the top 3 with 20 laps completed. The first 29 laps were run on green conditions when Cedric Gauvreau and Gabriel Cyr got together in turn 3.

The race resumed on lap 40, with Pecore remaining in the lead, though Draper stayed close. At the halfway point, Pecore led Draper, Pelletier, Johnathon Ferguson, and Friesen for the top 5.

While Pecore separated himself from the field, Pelletier and Draper had a good battle for second with 57 laps completed, with Pelletier having the edge. Heavy traffic was a factor as the leaders got close together, with Pelletier on the bumper of Pecore, and Ferguson now running in third.

Ferguson charged into second ahead Pelletier on lap 77. Pecore kept his distance from the rest of the field being meticulous in the traffic as the laps clicked down.

The final laps were spectacular as Pecore and Ferguson raced hard and got together, with Pecore remaining in the lead until the end.

When the race was over, the race director penalized Pecore, pushing him to third and giving the win to Pelletier, with Ferguson finishing second

In the special 40-lap Modified feature, invader Tim Fuller grabbed the lead, with Carey Terrance taking second in front of Alexandria's Chris Raabe, as the first 13 laps were in the books quickly.

On a restart. Terrance used the top side to get by Fuller in front of the flag stand, on lap 16. At halfway point, Terrance was first with Fuller and Raabe close behind. Lap traffic was a factor for the leaders, as Fuller was on the back bumper of Terrance. He used a lap car to slip by Terrance on lap 30, as Raabe remained in the mix in the last few laps. Fuller resisted and captured the feature, his first at Cornwall and fourth of the season on the DIRTcar circuit.

The Mini-Stock class had a 15-lap feature event on Monday. Marc Dagenais had the strongest car of the field, as he took the lead and never looked back, going on to capture his first feature race of the season, in front of Karl Potvin and Skylar Ladouceur.

The vintage club saw Josh Powers prevail in an exciting 20-lap event over Corey Winters.

Mini-Stock class at the Speedway looks competitive for 2018

sean Apr 10, 2018 - 12:23pm

With just over a month until the start of the 2018 season at the Cornwall Motor Speedway, it's a good time to preview the regular divisions.

Great things are expected this year in the entry-level Mini-Stock class, with 13 to 15 drivers scheduled to be at the track on a regular basis.

Marc Dagenais: The 2017 track champion will be back to defend his crown. The big guy will be looking at having an even better season this year, having captured 5 event wins in 2016.

Mike Gaucher: The veteran runner is expected to be back competing at the speedway. He's always one to watch, taking 3 wins last season.

Francis Desjardins: After finishing third in the points in 2016, Desjardins will be looking to challenge again for the title. He acquired a new car for this year and will look to collect a few wins in the process. Desjardins came close on several occasions last summer, with numerous second-place finishes.

Alexis Charbonneau: The French-speaking driver has committed again for 2018. Charbonneau enjoys the competition in Cornwall, and he is always one to watch. He finished fourth in the points last season. Expect the bright orange #49 car amongst the front five on many occasions.

Karl Potvin: The rookie of the year made his mark last season by finishing fifth in the points, collecting one feature win and being frequently in the front pack.  Potvin will look to move up the ranks in the division this year.

Skylar Ladouceur: Ladouceur did well last season, finishing in sixth. He will be sporting a new number for the upcoming year with two cars at his disposal. Race fans can also expect to see a father-and-son duo in action on some occasions, with dad Terry also taking the wheel.

Drivers such as Corey Gates, Patrice Moniere, Justin Jodoin, Richard Thornton, and Dylan Kirkland who all ran part of the schedule in 2016 have committed to be at the Cornwall track every Sunday evening this year. Veteran racer Chris James is also making his return to competition. Others such as Justin Leroux, Dominick Merckley, and Tyler French are expected to run in a few events as well.

Sheppard wins the Super DIRTcar Big Block Series to cap off 2017  at Cornwall Motor Speedway

sean Sep 18, 2017 - 6:05pm

The Big Blocks visited the Cornwall Motor Speedway last Sunday, capping off the 2017 racing season for the area's track.

Tim O’Brien and Keith Flach led the field of 30 cars to the green, when Steve Bernard slowed the group on the initial lap and yellow lights were out. Flach took first as racing continued, with Peter Britten and O’Brien colliding on lap 7.

Flach remained in front, with Larry Wight moving up to second and O’Brien bringing another caution on lap 21. Wight was quick on the restart to seize the lead over Flach on lap 25, as Billy Decker followed suit two laps later. Wight had Decker as a dancing partner, as Decker then grabbed the first position, while Matt Sheppard moved up to third.

Decker pulled away from the field as Wight, Sheppard, Flach, and Alexandria's Chris Raabe were the top 5 when the race reached the halfway point.

The leaders got into heavy traffic with 60 laps in the books. Cornwall Speedway track champion Chris Raabe slowed, and caution was out on lap 72. Decker remained the top man, however, as the battle continued for second spot. Sheppard was able to pass Wight for the position on lap 81 and set his sights on Decker. Lap traffic helped Sheppard, as he closed in on Decker with 10 laps to go. Sheppard used the inside lane and surprised the leader on lap 92. The drivers challenged each other the rest of the way, but Sheppard stayed in front to garner win #10 on the tour in 2017.

The Sept. 20 issue of The Glengarry News includes more racing news.
