Curling successes for GDHS student-athletes

At last week's SD&G high school curling championships, the Gaels girls team nabbed the title to qualify for EOSSAA. We have a team photo and details in the Feb. 25 edition of The Glengarry News. The GDHS mixed and boys rinks also did quite well, garnering silver and bronze respectively. As a result, the school was the overall champion on points.

La Citadelle 2 vs St. Joseph's 2
Char-Lan 4 (Ryan Vipond 2, Eric Lamarche, Gill McDonell) vs North Dundas 3

Tagwi didn't play in this tournament.

Top goal scorer on the day for Holy Trinity was Tyler Willard.

Playoffs are scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Cornwall's multi-sport complex, starting at 9:30am. Char-Lan is the lone team with a county connection to qualify.  The Crusaders will play against La Citadelle in the second semifinal, at 11am.

NCJHL playoffs take to the ice

(By Richard Charest)     The regular season on the National Capital Junior Hockey League ended Sunday, Feb. 15, with a game in St-Isidore, and now it's on to the playoffs.

The Embrun Panthers ended the season as the Regular Season Champions.

Teams qualifying for the quarter-finals will compete as follows in best-of-seven series:
Embrun Panthers (1st)     /  La Peche Predators  (8th)
Papineauville Vikings (2nd)   /  North Dundas Rockets (7th)
Vankleek Hill Cougars  (3rd)   /  Cumberland Bandits  (6th)
Gatineau Olympiques (4th)  / St Isidore Eagles  (5th)

The playoffs begin tonight with a quarter-final opener in Papineauville at 8pm.

Tomorrow, Feb. 18, the Vankleek Hill Cougars host game one of their series

Girls high school hockey playoffs scheduled for Feb. 18 in Cornwall

The SD&G girls high school hockey playoff tournament will be held at Cornwall's multi-sport complex on Feb. 18, starting at 10:15 a.m.  Char-Lan finished atop the standings with a perfect record (8-0), with St. Joseph's second (14 points). Other playoff qualifiers are Holy Trinity (10), La Citadelle (10), Seaway (8), and North Dundas (6).

Senior boys high school basketball playoff schedule

SDGAA senior boys 'A' basketball playoffs open Feb. 18. Here are the final regular-season standings:

1st:         HT          (8 - 0)
2nd:        SLSS       (6 - 2)
3rd:        GD          (6 - 2)
4th:        ESLC       (5 - 3)
5th:        ND          (3 - 5)
6th:        Tagwi        (2 - 6)

* SLSS is second, and GD is third. SL won the head-to-head against GD for the tie-breaker. Tagwi was tied with Seaway at 2-6, but got the final playoff spot on head-to-head.

High school basketball: Holy Trinity vs Tagwi

HT hosted Tagwi in the final SD&G senior regular season game for both teams last Friday. Trinity prevailed 71-42. Thomas LeGallais had 34 points and Jarred Blackadder 21 for the Falcons. For Tagwi, G. Mollo had 16 and A Grant 10.

Holy Trinity finished SD&G league play with an 8-0 record and an 18-9 record overall. The team will host the opening day of playoffs on Feb. 18. See more details in The Glengarry News.

Hawks alumni game scheduled for Saturday

The GM of the Hawkesbury Hawks, Ian Henderson sends out this reminder: Hawks alumni game on Saturday at 6:30pm in Hawkesbury. $5 ticket with silent auction, merchandise sale, and the opportunity to meet Hawks current players, as well as to watch some great hockey! The rink will be packed, so join the fun.

The current edition of the Hawks includes Glengarry boy Brandon Barillaro.  Rosters of alumni players expected to participated can be viewed here.

Tanner Spink scores in Colts win over Gloucester

In Friday night CCHL junior 'A' hockey action, the Cornwall Colts beat the Gloucester Rangers 5-2. Among the Colts goal scorers was Glengarry's own Tanner Spink. Defenceman Ross Craig picked up an assist.

The win came on the heels of a 3-0 loss to the same team in Cornwall on Thursday night.

The second-place Colts will be back in action Monday at 3pm on home ice.

River Kings update for Feb. 14

(By Rodney Wilson)     Christian Deschenes’ hat trick powered the first-place Eperviers to a 5-2 victory over the River Kings on Friday night.

Sorel’s powerplay was the difference as the Eperviers went 3-for-7 with the man advantage. Cornwall was 0-for-11 on the night.

With their second straight victory over the River Kings, Sorel improved to 26-7-1. The Eperviers hold a four-point lead over Jonquiere for first in the LNAH.

Rookie Nicolas Therrien, with his first of the season, and Sasha Pokulok had the River Kings goals.

Francois Ouimet and Guillaume Parenteau each had a pair of assists for Cornwall (9-23-3).

Pete Karvouniaris took the loss in goal, despite a 38-save performance.

Manuel Frechette, who made his return to the River Kings lineup after missing nearly six weeks with an upper-body injury, scored a knockdown victory over Sorel’s Jon Mirasty in a spirited first-period bout. 

NEXT WEEKEND: Cornwall is back in action next weekend with a home-and-home against the same Eperviers. Friday,

Feb. 20, the River Kings travel to Sorel.

On Sunday, Feb. 22, Cornwall hosts Sorel at the Civic Complex. The puck drops at 3 p.m. The matinee will mark the two teams' fourth straight contest against each other.
