Facebook blamed for spread of fake news

publisher Jun 21, 2019 - 9:32am

Fake news is a key driver for Canadians losing trust in media and Facebook is considered the worst offender of fake news distribution by two thirds of respondents.  In a new global survey of internet users by CIGI-Ipsos, social media is found to be the leading source of user Distrust on the internet.  More Canadians now blame social media companies for their media distrust (89% in 2019 vs 81% in 2018).  More than half of Canadians (53%) think social media has impacted their information access, but only 7% have closed their social media accounts as a result.

“This year’s survey of global attitudes not only underscores the fragility of the internet, but also netizens’ growing discomfort with social media and the power these corporations wield over their daily lives,” said Fen Osler Hampson, a distinguished fellow at CIGI and director of its Global Security & Politics program.

Selling tickets

editor Jun 19, 2019 - 1:36pm

Gary Martin wandered the streets of Maxville on Saturday during the village’s sidewalk sale selling $1,000 raffle tickets, the winner to be drawn at this weekend’s Maxville Fair on Sunday, June 23 at 5 pm. All proceeds from the raffle benefit the St. Vincent de Paul food bank and volunteers will be roaming the fairgrounds Fair weekend selling tickets. We caught up with Mr. Martin under the eaves of the busy Maxville Firefighters BBQ fundraiser tent, a popular spot during the sale. This year marked the 20th anniversary of village-wide event, and despite the rain, residents set up and treasure hunters roamed Main and side streets, mixing with residents and picking up a few treasures. The community sale was organized by the Maxville Chamber of Commerce whose dedicated volunteers have been instrumental in helping revitalize and beautify Maxville’s downtown centre and galvanize business in the village.

Survey says: Newington gets free library

publisher Jun 18, 2019 - 9:26am

The SDG Library is getting ready to launch its first Little Free Library.

The Library recently undertook a public voting campaign to collect input on choosing the location for the first book house. In total, 1,282 votes were received. When all the votes were tallied, South Stormont's Newington Fire Hall had received 50% of the votes.

The first Little Free Library is just about ready to go, thanks to the work of the students at Tagwi Secondary School who put the book house together. Over the next few weeks, Library staff will be coordinating the installation of the first book house and recruiting volunteers to help maintain it.

SDG Library is looking forward to officially opening the Little Free Library in July, and if all goes well, other locations could be added in the near future. For more information on this project, or to become a Little Free Library volunteer steward, please contact Susan Wallwork at swallwork@sdglibrary.ca or (613) 936-8777 ext. 226.

New fire chief

publisher Jun 12, 2019 - 12:05pm

Veteran firefighter Matthew Roy has succeeded Patrick Gauthier as North Glengarry Fire Chief.

“He is a natural leader, with more than 19 years of experience in fire services. He has grown through the ranks as a volunteer firefighter, training officer, District Chief and most recently, Deputy Chief.  He brings with him extensive knowledge and experience in both fire services and general management skills,” said CAO Sarah Huskinson.

Mr. Roy played an integral role in the development and implementation of a fire services training program, as outlined by the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office. He helped to modernize the department and to streamline training programs so that firefighters are better equipped to work together as a team and to deal with emergencies. He was also instrumental in the procurement of a new communications system which will enable firefighters to stay better connected during emergencies.

“Matthew has been a mentor to many firefighters who look to him for guidance and support. His natural leadership abilities will serve him well in his new role as Chief. I am looking forward to working with Matthew as part of our Senior Management Team and to seeing him continue to grow as a leader and a key member of our team,” said Ms. Huskinson.

He will be responsible for more than 60 firefighters, working out of stations in Alexandria, Maxville and Apple Hill.
